Don Dickens – Church Sexton
Don enlisted in the US Air Force in 1969 where he trained in sheet metal and structural repair of various types of aircraft. After an overseas tour he was assigned to Charleston AFB in 1971. While stationed in Charleston he was able to attend the Berkley-Charleston-Dorchester Technical Education Center where he completed his Associate Degree for Electronics Engineering Technology. Upon graduation he was to be discharged from the US Air Force in July 1973. General Telephone and Electronics were interviewing graduates of the class to work for their company in the new digital switching office.
Don was hired to do maintenance on their electronic switches and troubleshoot high speed data circuits, as well as specialized circuits that originated from the customer premises. He worked for GTE/Verizon for 30 years before retiring to assume the sexton’s job at St. Paul’s Church. During the 30 years working for GTE/Verizon, he had opportunities to work with people in construction projects including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical. He oversees the building and grounds maintenance at St. Paul’s Church.
Don’s interest in electronics and his telephone background helps him to maintain the data network, computer service for the staff, and the telephone system for the church. While working with computers he had a passion to learn how to build websites. Don learned web design and now maintains the website for St. Paul’s Church. Don enjoys working with parishioners helping them with computer challenges. He has been happily married to his wife Barbara since 1969. They have 2 children (Keith and Jennifer) whom they are very proud of.
